In the first year, the orchestra tested its *innovative “Side by Side” educational program* at Green Gables Elementary School in Lakewood. For two months, our musicians volunteered as on-site mentors and coaches. We exposed students to a sophisticated level of musicianship by pairing them with professional musicians during rehearsals. The final “Side by Side” concert showcased professionals and amateurs playing the same music, from the same music stands. The concert drew an audience of 100, many of whom had never before attended a classical concert.

We know of no other program that so effectively integrates the child-parent-teacher triangle while demonstrating the transformative power of the arts in our schools.
